On April 11th, Jim McElhinney, Executive Director of The Newburgh Ministry, visited Redeemer. His visits are part of the longstanding relationship between the Newburgh Ministry and Redeemer, and provide a wonderful way to hear the news about the ongoing efforts and tremendous work of this important ministry. On-site volunteers are always welcomed, and needed, but Jim shared with us other ways that we can help.
-
Pray for the needy people in Newburgh and for those who work with them.
-
Keep informed about the ongoing work of The Newburgh Ministry.
-
Donations of hygiene supplies (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, diapers, sanitary products, etc.) are needed. These items cannot be purchased with food stamps. Travel sized hygiene supplies are needed as well.
-
Soy formula is needed because it cannot be purchased with food stamps either.
-
Gently used clothing is needed.
-
When the new building is completed (late fall), volunteers will be needed. The new building will house a year-round, nighttime shelter for up to 19 homeless men and women at any one time. Volunteers are also needed during the day to staff the store, the nursery and to answer phones.
-
Family Promise, a Mid-Hudson affiliate of The Interfaith Hospitality Network is looking for support from local churches. Klaas Ehlers is the contact person.
Lastly, shared with us the wonderful news that their building at 9 Johnston Street in Newburgh is being rehabilitated. While this construction is proceeding, the Newburgh Ministry will be located at 290 Broadway.
