Home Community Newburgh Ministry

The Newburgh Ministry is a community center/hospitality house in the east end of the city of Newburgh. In 1983, the Newburgh Ministry was founded by three communities of Roman Catholic sisters. These communities and their members are still active as staff, board members and donors. The goal of the founding group of people was to approach working with people in poverty differently. Rather than trying to fix the individuals and systems that they, as helpers, had identified as having gone awry, they listened to people living and working in the neighborhood and to their understanding of the problem. Then they worked together with people to find solutions to the problems that were adequate for the people concerned. For the first decades there were few paid staff.

Today they continue the work begun in 1983 with the same vision. They continue to listen and respond to the needs of the people in the east end of Newburgh. They respond in light of the call of the Law, the Prophets and the Gospels.
